Focus and Beliefs
At Valour Primary School, we are committed to nurturing a vibrant community of engaged learners who are confident and effective communicators. We also aim to cultivate lifelong readers who possess a genuine love for reading, fostering curiosity and a passion for learning.
To achieve this, we emphasise the development of 21st-century competencies through the teaching of the English Language. This includes a strong focus on Multiliteracies to navigate diverse forms of communication, Metacognitive skills to enhance self-awareness in learning, and Inquiry Through Dialogue to encourage critical thinking, collaboration, and meaningful discussions.
National Curriculum for 2025: STELLAR 2.0 (Strategies for English Language Learning And Reading)
STELLAR is an interactive literacy programme that fosters confidence in learning English using children’s literature. A unit starts with a shared reading experience whereby our students read a book with the teacher and engage in oral discussions. This is followed by explicit teaching of language items and shared writing experiences.
To complement STELLAR, authentic learning opportunities will be provided for Valourians to communicate confidently, effectively and sensitively. They will also be encouraged to explore ideas, concepts and areas of interest beyond the curriculum, developing them to be creative and critical inquirers.

Programmes
Theme-Based Reading Programme
A series of book themes are introduced throughout the year, aligned with various school events and in collaboration with other departments. The thematic focus allows for the promotion of books and activities which provide our students exposure to a wide range of genres and topics. Some themes that have been featured in the past include “Celebrating Singapore” and “Science and Sustainability”.
Book Week
Once a year, the EL Department celebrates reading by curating a week-long programme featuring events such as book sharing, author talks, recess activities and book fairs. These are aimed at introducing students to new books and genres. Students also get to see stories come to life by dressing up as their favourite book characters.
